About Therapy

Introduction to Existential Therapy

Hello, I’m Julie Thomas—an experienced, BACP-accredited counsellor and psychotherapist. I offer a warm, compassionate space for individuals seeking support through life’s challenges. My approach is rooted in existential therapy, a thoughtful and reflective way of working that encourages you to explore life’s deeper questions in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Existential therapy is not about labels or diagnoses. It’s about gently understanding the feelings that sit beneath the surface—those moments when life feels uncertain, overwhelming, or out of balance. Together, we explore what it means to be you, here and now.

How I Work

In our sessions, you’ll find a calm, confidential space where you’re free to express whatever is on your mind. My role isn’t to give advice or quick solutions, but to walk alongside you as you uncover your own insights, choices, and direction.

Through gentle and honest conversation, we can explore what matters most to you—your relationships, your sense of purpose, the anxieties or emotions you carry, and the ways you relate to yourself and others. There’s no fixed agenda—just space to pause, reflect, and connect with your own inner wisdom.

The Heart of Existential Therapy

Existential therapy is grounded in some simple but profound principles that guide my work:

  • Freedom and Responsibility – We all have the ability to make choices, even when life feels limited. With freedom comes the invitation to take responsibility for how we respond to life’s events.

  • Meaning and Purpose – Together, we can explore what brings you meaning and how to reconnect with the parts of life that feel fulfilling and real.

  • Authenticity – Being true to yourself in a world full of expectations can be challenging. I’m here to support you in finding your own voice and path.

  • Connection and Isolation – We are all unique individuals, yet we deeply need connection. Therapy can be a place to explore both your inner world and your relationships with others.

  • Facing Life’s Uncertainty – Whether it’s change, loss, or the unknown, existential therapy helps us face life’s uncertainties with courage and reflection.

These principles shape a supportive and respectful space where we work at your pace, guided by your needs.

Who I Work With

I support adults from all walks of life—those who are struggling with anxiety, grief, self-doubt, or life transitions, as well as those simply seeking greater clarity and emotional balance.

Some of the common reasons people come to see me include:

  • Feeling anxious, low, or overwhelmed

  • Coping with bereavement or loss

  • Navigating a life change, such as separation or career shifts

  • Exploring identity, self-esteem, or purpose

  • Healing from trauma or difficult past experiences

  • Feeling ‘stuck’ or disconnected

You don’t need to have it all figured out. Many of my clients begin therapy feeling unsure or apprehensive—that’s completely normal. Together, we create space to explore whatever you’re carrying, with kindness and care.

How My Approach Differs

While therapies like CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) often focus on changing thoughts and behaviours, existential therapy invites you to explore the why behind those thoughts—to understand the emotional landscape that shapes how you see the world.

Unlike psychodynamic therapy, which often looks to the past, existential therapy focuses on your present experience and your relationship to the life you are living now. My approach is always tailored to you—there is no one-size-fits-all in therapy.

What matters most is that you feel seen, heard, and supported, and that together we can begin to make sense of what you’re going through.
